Professor P. Eline Slagboom haalde haar doctoraal examen in de biologie in 1987 en haar postdoctorale graad in de biochemie in 1993. Tussen 1993 en 2000 was Slagboom onderzoeker bij de afdeling Vaat- en Bindweefsel Onderzoek aan het Gaubius Laboratorium, TNO Preventie en gezondheid (TNO-PG), Nederland. Ze startte een groep voor genetisch epidemiologisch onderzoek op, dat gericht was op het identificeren van genetische determinanten van multifactoriële aandoeningen. In 2000 kreeg ze een NWO-programma subsidie van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) en werd ze benoemd tot hoogleraar Moleculaire Epidemiologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC). Ze richtte een nieuwe sectie Moleculaire Epidemiologie (Molepi) en het genotypeercentrum op (personeel nu 30 fte).
Afgelopen 10 jaar is de focus van het onderzoek geweest omics gegevens (genetische, transcriptomische, epigenetische, glycomische, metabole gegevens) in de moleculaire epidemiologische studies te gebruiken om biomarkers van veroudering en ouderdomsziekten te vinden in menselijke cohorten en de paden achter deze complexe eigenschappen te begrijpen. Voor dit doel wordt een diversiteit van menselijke cohorten met unieke opzet van de studie geanalyseerd. Onder deze cohorten bevindt zich het Nederlandse Hongerwinterstudie cohort om de late consequenties van prenatale blootstelling onder ongunstige condities te onderzoeken.
Slagboom is één van de mede-oprichters van het verouderingsonderzoek binnen het LUMC ondersteund door verschillende stichtingen door Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI). Ze heeft zowel de Leiden LangLeven Studie (ism Professor RGJ Westendorp) als de artrose progressie studie (GARP: Genetics, Arthrosis and PRogression) studie (ism Dr Ingrid Meulenbelt en Professor M. Kloppenburg) geïnitieerd en is principle investigator (PI) van van deze studies. Verder heeft Slagboom de Moleculaire Epidemiologie en Bioinformatica opgestart en geeft zij master classes binnen dit vakgebied.
Daarnaast is Slagboom lid van vele nationale leescommissies, waaronder de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) interdisciplinaire VIDI-commissie (2007-2010), Nederlandse Hartstichting Wetenschappelijke advies commissie (2007-2011) en is zij redactieraadslid van het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift “Aging Cell”. Ze heeft een leidende rol in grote consortia binnen verouderingsonderzoek zoals het “Netherlands Consortium for Healthy Ageing” (NCHA) als wetenschappelijk directeur waarin ze een samenwerkingsonderzoek heeft neergezet met de industrie, en in de stuurgroep of als lid van grootschalige gezamenlijke onderzoeksprojecten EU (Treat ~ OA, GEHA en LifeSpan). P. Eline Slagboom is PI van een nieuw grootschalig samenwerkingsproject EU-project dat is begonnen in 2011 (IDEAL: Integrated research on DEvelopmental determinants of Ageing and Longevity) en van een “Biobanking and Biomolecular Research Infrastructure” (BBMRI) Regenboog project op Metabolomics.
